PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
It has has been shown that Buchu oil extract (Agathosma betulina) has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal activity.
AGATHOSMA BETULINA OIL DISTILLATE
This oil from the leaf extract contains Quercetin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound described as having potent activities against the inflammatory immune cells Th 17 (inhibition of such cells). It also contains other molecules which are able to inhibit the migration of inflammatory cells from the circulation to areas of tissue damage. The expression of the CD11/C18 heterodimer on the inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and monocytes are not unregulated when such cells are triggered in the presence of the oil extract. Monocytes are the source of inflammatory cytokines such as IL6 and TNF-a. In vitro research has shown that the secretion of these pro-inflammatory factors is inhibited at the gene level: if the genes are not triggered, then the cells do not secrete these factors.
Specifically effective in the topical management of acute and chronic pain including Edema.
Agathosma betulina oil extract also acts as a broad spectrum anti-fungal agent used in the treatment of dermal infections caused by various species of pathogenic dermatophytes and yeasts. The primary action of the oil extract is against dividing and growing fungal organisms.
In vitro Agathosma Betulina oil distillate exhibits anti-fungal activity against Malassezia pachydermatis, Candida spp, C.albicans and S.pombe. Agathosma betulina oil is therefore a natural preservative-free “antibiotic” active against a wide variety of pathogenic gram negative and some gram positive bacteria. In vitro research and tests have determined that this Agathoma betulina oil is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting normal protein synthesis in susceptible micro-organisms. Specifically Agathoma betulina oil is active against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Staphylococcus ssp and Proteus ssp.
